Koa Bowl Blank

Koa is a rare and expensive hardwood that only grows in Hawaii. Clive brought this piece back with him following a visit to Kaua'i, Hawaii in January 2007.

Clive also turned this Purpleheart cruet set.

Oak Bowl

Next up is a fabulous Oak bowl. How he managed to turn it without snapping the legs off (or his fingers for that matter) is beyond me.

.  .  . and talking about not snapping things off, here's a long-stemmed Yew goblet which managed to find it's way to a club meeting and back home again unscathed.

Here are some more recent photos, together with a few words from Clive:

Don't know what the timber is for the Hollow vase as it was given to me. I have since sold it back to the lady who gave me the wood. I'd love to know where she obtained such a stunning piece of wood. I love doing hollow forms and this was a particularly delicate one; very satisfying. There is a natural fissure in the wood, visible in some of the photos. I chose to make a highlight of it, however, for it to work artistically, I reckoned that the walls needed to be turned very thin, which they are. I was very proud of this piece, especially when Chris Eagles gave it such a good critique at the 31st Oct club night. More than any other piece, this one epitomises my style and what I like about turned wood.

The bowl is Olive Ash of about 10" x 3". Again, I like this one very much.

I could go on for ages about "form" and why I feel certain shapes just work and most others do not. I have studied these two pieces in some detail as they both "work" for me.

The Powerpoint presentation below records the creation of a large natural edged cherry wood bowl.
