A Grand Day Out

I'm a Lumberjack .  .  .

Our convoy of five cars and trailers left Greatfield Nursery on the Saturday morning at 09.15 and it was great that everyone was on time as usually there's at least one late comer! It was a lovely bitter/frosty morning and we all got stuck in felling the two trees as we had three chain saws between us.

One old Yew was in three trunks after the first 5ft so we took the three smaller trunks off first and de-twigged them whilst the heavy gang took the full trunk of apx 2ft diameter off at ground level. The other tree was about the same size but the snag with that one was getting it to fall in a certain area so as to miss the house and a certain part of the garden.

By 11am both trees were down and impressively exactly where they were hoped to have been felled. We soon had a ginormous bonfire going of all the rubbish and we retired indoors to a lovely fish & chip lunch graciously bought in by Arthur's wife. The trees were all trimmed, cut and loaded by 2.30pm and we were away!. Ken and I went back on Sunday morning to collect the last trailer of wood and that was that.

Many thanks go to all who helped on the day; the work rate was impressive and it showed by the vast amount of work we got through in a short space of time. The gang included Ian M-W (tea boy), Ken (of Chainsaw Massacre fame), Pete the Ferret, Rover Jim and Ian H (the disorganiser); not forgetting Andrew the heavyweight, son of him who owned the trees.

Monday Ian M-W and Jim did a couple of trips to the sawmill in Cirencester to have the trunks planked and I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

Well done one and all.
